Services will be held at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home in Burnet, Texas. At the request of the deceased, the service will be a closed casket visitation only. Funeral Service to be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, February, 22, 2020. A brief visitation for family and friends will take place following the funeral. There will be no graveside services.
Louis Metzler was born in Ft. Collins, on August 27, 1924 to German immigrant parents Ludwig and Kathrine Metzler. He attended Lathe Operation classes at the National Defense School in Ft. Collins and worked as a truck driver until he joined the United States Army on June 8, 1943. He was promoted to Sgt in the 754th Field Artillery Battalion. His battalion landed at Utah Beach two days after D-Day and was involved in military campaigns in Northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. Decorations he received were the American Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Although wounded during battle in Northern France he did not receive the Purple Heart. After the end of the war and because he could speak German, Louis volunteered to stay in Germany serving with the military policing action helping to restore life for the German population.
Before his deployment to service in Europe, Louis married Doreen Starkey on May 2, 1944 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were married 23 years before her death on April 2, 1967. They had four children Robert, Thomas, Patti and David Metzler.
Louis married Marigold Susan Meyer on November 9, 1967. On January 31, 1989 Marigold suffered a severe stroke and became comatose. From that time until her death June 18, 2006, Louis cared for Marigold in his home for 27 years without nursing aid. He was a devoted husband and caregiver.
Louis was self employed in Midland, TX operating Metzler Building Specialties. The business was in lath and plaster contracting work. He worked on many school, government and private projects. He sold the business in 1959 and moved his family to Lake Buchanan operating Brown Gable Lodges and continuing his construction skills in building many homes in the area.
Louis loved travelling and working with his hands. He was very artistic and got involved in carving wood. His many pieces are prized and enjoyed by family and friends.
Louis is survived by his four children. Robert and Dorothy Metzler, Thomas and Rose Metzler, Patti and Tim O’Donnell, and David and Biddie Metzler. His grand children Robert and Lisa Metzler, Chadd Metzler, Kelli and Ron Starnes, Lori and Timothy Barnett, Olivia and Zeke Gowin, and Jennifer and Jeff Lagrone ; and his brother Bill and Roberta Metzler; 11 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Louis is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Barney, Harry, Ed, Albert, Alfred, Walter and his sisters Lorraine Mechem and Helen Hahn.
The family of Louis Metzler wishes to thank the nursing staff and aides at Oaks Nursing Home, Altus Hospice and the many friends that supported and helped our father.
