Paul Pollmuller of Calgary, Alberta died peacefully on Wednesday, January 10th, 2024. Paul was 92 years old and survived by his loving wife Hilda (nee Reineke). In 1954 they were married at St. Mary’s Church and were on the way towards celebrating 70 years of marriage.
Paul was born in Germany on May 28th, 1931 to parents Johannes and Margarette (nee Broker) in the tiny village of Ameke. From a large family of 9 children he was the 4th oldest. At age 14 he had finished primary school when he began an apprenticeship as a blacksmith. After three years he was successful in landing a job in the local coal mine, where his father had worked. He was a drummer in the local marching band and he liked to spend his money on fine clothes and motorcycles. He and Hilda met at one of the dances where Paul was playing in the band.
In 1953 with hardly a penny in his pocket Paul arrived in Canada on Thanksgiving Day. Not knowing the language he scraped by with odd jobs and the following year sent money to Germany for Hilda to immigrate to Canada.
Paul worked diligently in many of the construction trades and eventually started his own exterior contracting firm. Together he and Hilda raised 3 boys and on almost every available weekend the family ventured out to Banff, Kananaskis, and Bragg Creek.
Survived by his wife Hilda; their 3 sons, Roy, Brian and Andrew; 4 grandchildren, Brandon (Divina), Josh (Vanessa) Bishop, Erika Pollmuller and Josef Pollmuller and 2 great grandsons Finn and Isaac Bishop. Paul was dedicated to his family and will always be remembered for his amazing generosity, hard work ethic and acceptance of others. We will miss him dearly.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Saturday, January 20th, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.
