Gloria Maliniak, age 93, a longtime resident of Camp Hill, died peacefully after a short illness, on August 25, 2020. Gloria was the youngest daughter of Rev. Michael Kashuba, an Orthodox priest, whose work took his family too many parishes in PA, NY, MI, and Chicago where Gloria was born.
Gloria graduated from Freeland High School in 1945. She attended Wyoming Seminary where she studied accounting and music. She contracted tuberculosis and was in a TB sanitarium for over a year. Gloria had several surgeries, one of which cost her a lung. While at the sanitarium, Gloria met her future husband, Peter Maliniak. They were married February 23, 1952 and lived in Middletown, before settling in Camp Hill. Gloria worked as an accountant for several different firms.
She was a founding member of Christ the Savior Orthodox Church in Harrisburg and a lifelong choir member. Her artwork of Pysanky (Ukrainian Easter eggs) was displayed in local museums, churches, and schools. She enjoyed teaching others the art form and its history. Gloria was a lifelong learner. She was an avid reader, especially non-fiction, because she could learn more about people and places. She attended a variety of classes offered in the community to expand her knowledge. She also participated in a writer's group and finished many chapters of her autobiography, ”Born in the Bishop's Bed ", a reference to her birth in Chicago, where her father was a visiting priest. Her love of music began as a child, often singing at home and church with family, and singing solos in high school and seminary. Music was a joy she shared with others along with the gift of being a loyal and caring friend to all.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, Rev Michael Kashuba and Catherine Jubach Kashuba; her husband, Peter Maliniak; sisters, Jeanne Bruder and Nadya Snow; and brothers, Eugene and Myron Kashuba. She is survived by her son, Mark Maliniak; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Due to COVID-19, a family service will be held August 31 at Christ the Savior Orthodox Church, with burial at Rolling Green Cemetery in Camp Hill. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Christ the Savior Orthodox Church, 5501 Old Locust Lane, Harrisburg, PA 17109.
