John B Turo

John B. Turo, of Camp Hill, passed away on November 16, 2012. He was born in Mechanicsburg on November 19, 1931, the son of the late Andrew and Mary Jane (DiNunzio) Turo. He graduated from Harrisburg Catholic High School and Indiana Institute of Technology where he was the Editor–in-Chief of the Kekiongan yearbook and a member of Sigma Phi Delta International Social Professional Fraternity of Engineers. He was stationed in Key West, FL, as a Navy Seamen during the Korean Conflict. He retired from National Gypsum Company. A member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Camp Hill for 40 years, he served as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. A member of the 4th degree, Bishop Shannahan Assembly he served as Financial Secretary for the Knights of Columbus at both Our Lady of Queenship Council # 4068 and Good Shepherd Council # 10685. He was a member of the Serra Club of the Diocese of Harrisburg. One of his proudest achievements was his service as the Chairman of the National Catholic Committee on Scouting, the Chairman of the Harrisburg Diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting and Region 3 (PA and NJ) Catholic Committees. An active member of the Keystone Area Council BSA serving as Vice President of Relationships, Chairman of the High Adventure Program, and many others. He was inducted into the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s National Honor Society, where he was bestowed the Vigil Honor, the highest honor in the Order of the Arrow. He was awarded the St. George Emblem and the Silver Beaver Award. He was a volunteer firefighter and 50 year member for Washington Fire Company in Mechanicsburg. He served as Hampden Township Commissioner, Hampden Township Fire Commissioner, Chairman of the Tri-County Planning Commission and an elected Republican Committee Man and member of the Cumberland County Republican Committee. Surviving is his beloved wife, Joan, of 58 years; four children, Ron Turo, husband of Claire Fetterman; Noreen Turo Garney, wife of Robert Garney; Anthony Turo, husband of Maureen Miles; and Christine Turo-Shields, wife of Dave Turo-Shields; thirteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, five nieces and his brother, Nicholas Turo, husband of Sandra Turo and cousin, Sr. Josephine D’Angelo, Sisters of Mercy, Dallas, PA. He was preceded in death by his sister, Maria Turo Hausman. Visitation will be Monday, November 19, 2012, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM, at Neill Funeral Home, 3401 Market St. Camp Hill. Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 20, 2012, at 11:00 AM at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 3435 Trindle Rd., Camp Hill, with visitation one hour prior to Mass, at the church. Burial Rolling Green Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to Good Shepherd Catholic Church.
