The Johnstown, Pa., native was a U.S. Navy veteran and a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering, where he was a member of the Pitt Swim Team. He later pursued his Master’s and PhD in Electrical and Nuclear Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania.
He and his family resided for many years in Monroeville, Pa., where he was a Design Engineer for the Westinghouse Electric Corporation. He was involved with Nuclear Space Propulsion technology at NASA, and Urban Rapid Transit, including BART in San Francisco and Metro de Montreal. He was also instrumental in the design of the first Nuclear Reactor Simulator following the Three Mile Island disaster.
His family and friends will remember him for his quick wit, keen intelligence, and his love of all Pittsburgh sports. Kardos was an ardent fan at his grandchildren’s sporting events, especially Good Shepherd, Camp Hill, and Susquehanna University football. He was a long-time member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, where he served as an usher. He completed his memoirs, "The Journey Begins" in 2019 at the age of 91.
Kardos is preceded in death by his wife, Wanda (Cwik), brothers Edward Kardos and Francis Kardes, and his parents Francis and Mary Kardos.
He is survived by his children, Dr. Robert Kardos and his wife Dorothy of Lemoyne, Cheryl Patchin of Camp Hill, and Dr. Jack Kardos of York, Pa. He is also survived by grandchildren Rachel Orth and her husband Ed of Florida, Natalie Kardos and her husband Matt Hart of Seattle, Neil Kardos and his wife Stephanie of Connecticut, Stephanie Kardos of Amsterdam, NL, Alex Patchin of Pittsburgh, and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Kardes of Johnstown, and brother John Kardes and his wife Sally of Pittsburgh.
