Ida S. Grodofsky
May 2, 1925 – October 22, 2019
Ida (Wolf) Grodofsky of Canton, MA formerly of Southbury, CT, Maplewood, NJ and New York City, passed away on October 22, 2019 at the age of 94. Beloved wife of 70 years to the late Dr. Daniel Grodofsky. Devoted mother of Michael Grodofsky and his late wife Sherry, Mindy Grodofsky-Gilmore and her husband Jeffrey Gilmore, Ethan Grodofsky and his wife Sarina, and Seth Grodofsky and his wife Merav. Cherished grandmother of Melissa, Scott, Lauren, Jonathan, Matthew, Ariel, Aleeza, Tayir, Nofar and Yuval. Loving sister of Diane Rogoff.
Born in Brooklyn, New York. As a teen joined the Zionist Labor Movement (HaShomer HaTzair) and was a founder of Kibbutz Sasa in the new state of Israel in 1949. She returned to America where she became a maverick urban educator and union activist in both New York and New Jersey school systems. She was among the early core of special education teacher consultants.
She remained active throughout her retirement at Heritage Village in Connecticut, Orchard Cove in Massachusetts and in Sarasota, Florida. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, yoga and educational programs. She remained committed to her Jewish identity and to the State of Israel. She was truly a professional volunteer. Lastly, she was a fashionista of second-hand clothing and furniture shops. Family graveside services will be held on Friday, October 25th at 1:00 PM at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, 7800 Myrtle Avenue, Glendale, Queens, New York. Memorial observance in NJ will be at the home of Ethan and Sarina Grodofsky beginning after sundown on Saturday, October 26th until 10PM and continuing on Sunday, October 27th from 3 to 9PM. Memorial observance in MA will be held at Ida’s late residence on Monday, October 28th from 3 to 5PM and 7 to 9PM.
Memorial observance in NY will be at the home of Michael Grodofsky on Tuesday, October 29th and Wednesday, October 30th from 1 to 9PM.
