Born on June 19, 1929 to O. Foster Hilligoss and Margaret (Clark) Hilligoss in Franklin, Indiana, Edith graduated from Sheridan High School where she played saxophone in the band and enjoyed school activities with friends. After graduation, she attended one year at Franklin College. She was married in 1948 to William “Bill” Thornberry and they settled in Carmel, Indiana until his death in 2000. Bill and Edith owned and operated Thornberry Real Estate of Westfield.
They were longtime members of Carmel Friends Church and Edith later attended Clarksville Christian Church. Avid team bowlers and bridge players, they spent many enjoyable evenings with their Sunday School Class Bridge Club. Edith was a longtime member of Eastern Star, Tri Kappa and DAR. She also was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed craft projects. She recently celebrated her 90th birthday with family and friends.
Edith is survived by 4 children; Thomas (Norma) Thornberry of Indianapolis, Robert (Marcia) Thornberry of Tallahassee, Florida, Wanda (Mark) Dodd of Pendleton, Dale (Julie) Thornberry of Noblesville; 14 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a brother, John Hilligoss of Indianapolis, and two sons, Greggory Thornberry (1954) and Jack Thornberry (1986).
