Gloria was born in St. Louis, Missouri on January 20, 1931 to Margaret (Dunlap) and Russell Campbell. She was the oldest of three children. Her fondest childhood memories revolved around summers with her grandmother, Sarah Mae Dunlap and her Aunt Lee, and pursuing her piano studies. Pictures of her family are still displayed upon the cherished piano that her parents presented to her as a teenager. During her childhood, her family relocated to Fulton, NY, where her father was a pilot instructor during the Second World War, and she graduated from Fulton High School in the late 1940’s.
Gloria was married to Vernon D. O’Connor of Skaneateles, NY on October 2, 1962, in an elopement near Lake George, NY. They later reaffirmed their marriage vows in a formal Catholic ceremony held fireside in their home in Marcellus, NY. Gloria was a devoted wife and mother, raising her daughter, Margaret Ann, in Marcellus, NY. She was a bookkeeper in the automotive industry most of her adult life, but her family and friends will remember her best for her beautiful gardens and her talent for hosting elaborate poolside parties. Her love for entertaining guests continued throughout her retirement in Venice, Florida, and her return to NY not long after the death of her husband in 1999.
In 2016, Gloria joined her daughter and her family as they moved to Colorado, where she was blessed with the strength and good health to attend her grandson’s hockey games, and to enjoy the splendor of the mountains and canyons of Colorado. Despite her 87 years, her death was unexpected.
Gloria was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Vernon D. O’Connor, and is now also reunited with her beloved and oft remembered grandmother, Sarah Mae Dulap, her mother and father, Margaret (Dunlap) and Russell Campbell, her Aunt Lee (Dunlap), and her Uncles Jack, Paul, John, Donald and Marshell (Buddy) Dunlap, all of whom she loved dearly. Also waiting to greet her on her next journey are her mother and father-in-law, Anna (Dillon) and James O’Connor, sister and brother in-law, Larona (Walters) and James O’Connor, and her niece Mary Beth (O’Connor) Hobart, as well as treasured friends, Moira and Walt Duelfer.
She leaves the legacy of her daughter, Margaret O’Connor and her husband, Hank John, as well as her grandson, Asher John. She is also survived by her sister, Margie (Campbell) McNamara, her brother, Richard Campbell, her nieces Cindy (McNamara) Kellogg, Meredeth (McNamara) Paddock, Donna (O’Connor) Zubrowski, Kathleen (O’Connor) Mangel, her nephew, Mike O’Connor, and many friends, including Dave, Cathy, David, Danny and Dillon Moteyunas, who she loved as though they were her own children and grandchildren.
A Catholic Mass will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018, at 10:15 a.m., at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church in Castle Rock, CO. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Castle Rock, CO. For more information, please contact Olinger, Andrews Funeral Home in Castle Rock, CO.
