Fannie Mae Hoke Borchers was born in Westminster, Maryland on September 3, 1931 to parents Solomon L. and Grace Bollinger Hoke. She was raised in beautiful Bachman’s Valley with her five siblings, George Hoke (deceased), Solomon Hoke, Florence Wolfe, Julia Edwards and Ruth Beeson (deceased).
On June 8th, 1952 she married John W. Borchers, Jr. They remained married for 67 years until John’s passing on November 27th, 2019. Fannie and John had two children, John Robert Borchers (Bob, deceased) and daughter, Grace Borchers Martin. At John’s passing Fannie made it clear she wanted to go home to heaven with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and John.
At age 74 Fannie had a disabling stroke and was cared for by John for almost 12 years in their home in Baltimore where they lived for over 63 years. Fannie Mae inherited from her parents a farm on Eckard Rd where she longed to return for many years. She offered a piece of the farm to her daughter and (at the time) future son-in-law, Christopher P. Martin for a wedding gift. They built a log home on it. Chris and Grace have two children, Caroline Grace and Christopher Daniel, Fannie’s only two grandchildren. To say she loved them dearly is not saying enough. She prayed for them hardly every day and I am sure she is watching over them from heaven. Caroline is now married to Paul Brockman and resides in Virginia and Christopher resides in Baltimore, Maryland. Chris and Grace are now the owners and caretakers of her sacred farm. Fannie was finally able to return to Carroll County for the last 18 months of her life, residing at Longview Nursing Home where her daughter Grace cared for her daily.
Fannie had many “loves” but the thing she loved most was her salvation through Jesus Christ her Lord. She spoke of him daily and professed the gospel to everyone, everywhere. She was surely the “light in the darkness”, never hesitating to ask, “Are you saved?”. She became quite an evangelist if she had any doubts of your salvation. Planting many seeds and harvesting several as well. What an example to us all!!
Fannie also loved cooking and gardening, combining the two for some awesome meals. She was instrumental in feeding large groups of log home builders over a one year period. At the end of a year of building she cooked a gourmet meal for 175 people at Chris and Grace’s wedding. She was a great cook which her son-in-law, Chris appreciated from day one of eating at her home in the dating years. She loved to plant things especially tree’s and she planted many on her farm.
Fannie always spoke the truth in love, not always being received well by some but she always cared for people and their eternal home.
A Memorial Service will be celebrated at Grace Bible Baptist Church 1518 N. Rolling Road, Baltimore, MD 21228 on March 1, 2020 at 3 PM.
