Robert Alan Waichunas

Robert Alan Waichunas, 78, of Gilbert, AZ, died on March 13, 2024.

Robert was born in Chicago in 1945 to Ann and George Benes. He loved to get into mischief and tinker around in his uncle's garage. He attended Kelly High School before joining the Air Force and attending Washburne Trade School.

Robert had a great sense of humor. He loved jokes and acting silly. He had the most infectious laugh and cheesy grins.

He also had a rebellious side. Robert was a bass player in a band called "The Phantoms." He rode a motorcycle, even belonging to a motorcycle club.

Robert met his wife, Darlene, on a blind date. He did not impress her. Thankfully, Darlene decided to give him another try, resulting in a 53-year marriage. One of their favorite stories was about his first dinner with Darlene's parents. While trying to impress her parents, he thought cutting a pickle with a knife and fork made him look sophisticated. Needless to say, Darlene still laughs about it to this day.

Robert was an extremely hardworking man. He became an over the road truck driver. Robert loved being on the road. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 705, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, where he spent 25 years driving. Robert boasted over 2 million miles accident free.

Robert's passion was being a member of the Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the US Air Force. He proudly served for 25 years, instilling his love of flight and helping others in many of the people he met during his tenure there.

Robert was extremely proud of both his children. His love was unconditional. He was ecstatic that they had made it further in life than he did and would talk about their achievements to anyone who would listen. This pride only increased by ten-fold, as he bragged about his grandson, Grayson.

Robert was preceded in death by his younger brother, John Benes, father, George Benes, and his mother, Ann Benes. He is survived by his wife, Darlene, son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Cindy, daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Adam, grandson Grayson and grand furbabies, Gibbs, and Loki. Robert also leaves behind his sister, Marie Benes, and his nieces and nephews and cousin. Last but not least, he is survived by all the friends and "kiddos" he touched along the way.

There will be a celebration of his life at a later date.
