On November 16, 2018, Eva Jean Coward, of Charlotte, went to receive the reward secured for her by our Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross.
Born August 5, 1927, in Sacramento, Calif., she was preceded in death by her parents Walter G. Terwilleger and Geneva Terwilleger (Ward), and by Roderick “Rod” W. Coward (on May 12, 2012), of New Bern, N.C., her husband of 66 years, whom she met at First Baptist Church of Santa Maria, Calif., while Rod was stationed there in WWII.
Eva lived a life of service and rock-solid love to her family. She served faithfully by her husband’s side throughout his career of 30 years in the United States Air Force, which required them to live all over the world, including Alaska, Maryland, Ohio, Taiwan, Illinois, Pakistan, Libya, Virginia, California (while Rod was in Thailand), Nebraska, Germany, Italy, and New York. In each place Mom had the house completely set up, pictures hung, all packing boxes cleared away, and dinner on the table within days of arrival.
After Rod retired from the Air Force in 1978, they moved to Charlotte and became active members of Providence Baptist.
Eva served many years as a Red Cross volunteer in various hospitals’ ERs, and she was an avid golfer, but each day she made it a point to be there when the children came home from school. Eva loved to read and was gifted at cooking and handicrafts and had great fashion and design sense. Eva was loving, sharp, quick witted, no-nonsense, and perpetually youthful at heart.
Eva lived for eight years at Carriage Club, Old Providence Road, Charlotte, where she was active and enjoyed life surrounded by great friends. And in her final year, she was well cared-for by the wonderful staffs at Clare Bridge, Carriage House, and Hospice & Palliative Care, Charlotte.
Eva is survived by her children Roderick W. Coward, Jr. (Jean), Samuel Gordon Coward (Michele), and David F. Coward (Naomi); grandchildren Chrissy, Rick, Kelly, Matthew, Matt, Ashley, and Hannah; great-grandchildren Colin, Bridget, Jillian, William, Landen, Korben, Lilu, Elsie, William, Anna Kate, Paxton, Parker, Crew, Samantha, Tatiana, and Virginia.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, Nov. 26, 2018, at Providence Baptist Church, 4921 Randolph Rd., Charlotte, N.C.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to Wycliffe Bible Translators, PO Box 628200, Orlando, FL 32862; Providence Baptist Church, 4921 Randolph Rd., Charlotte, NC 28211; or Alzheimer’s Disease Research, 22512 Gateway Center Dr., Clarksburg, MD 20871.
