Glen Elwood Shirkey
August 31, 1929 – April 14, 2018
Glen Elwood Shirkey “Nick”, age 88, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family.
He was born on August 31, 1929 in Rockingham Co., VA to the late Ervin E. Shirkey and Velma Saufley Shirkey.
He graduated from Robert E Lee High School in Staunton VA. He excelled in football, basketball, and especially baseball. He signed a Major League contract with the St. Louis Browns. He then served four years in the Air Force. After graduating from Bridgewater College he was in the insurance industry.
He was a kind and humble gentleman who enjoyed his sports, woodworking and travel. Most of all, he enjoyed time spent with family.
Mr. Shirkey is survived by his wife of 63 years, Kathryn Shirkey; daughter, Carol Shirkey; son, Eric T. Shirkey and his wife Debra; grandchildren, Kyle Elwood Shirkey and his wife Taylor, Lauren Elizabeth Shirkey, and Michelle Suzanne Shirkey; great granddaughter, Parker Thompson Shirkey and sister, Helen Miller.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Stanley Shirkey; sisters, Rosalee Campbell and Kathleen Rossetti.
A private family graveside service will be held. The graveside service will be conducted by the Reverend Amanda Robertson of The Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter.
