Hazel C. Lands

Hazel Lands, 97, died peacefully at Brookdale Assisted Living on Monday morning, April 8, 2019. Her health had deteriorated following pneumonia.

She was devoted to her family. Her memory will be kept alive by her four daughters: Rosemary Lands and Judy L. Reeves of Charlotte, Jill Rice of Monroe, NC, and Dottie L. Bowling (Kirby) of Virginia Beach, VA.

She is also survived by her grandchildren: Christopher Reeves, Shane Reeves, Dana Eldridge, Bethany McSwain, and Victoria Bowling; four great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Hazel was predeceased by her husband Loyd G. Lands, her parents Clyde Tracy Currie and Ruby Currie, her sister Dorothy Burrell, and her brother Clyde Tracy Currie, Jr. Hazel was born in Richmond, Virginia but grew up in North Carolina; she graduated from Spartanburg High School. She and Loyd were married on Valentine’s Day and moved to Charlotte shortly after the end of World War II.

She enjoyed traveling, loved flowers and gardening, cooking, bird watching, and volunteering with charities, including Crisis Assistance. Hazel was retired from the U. S. Postal Service. A devout Christian, she was an active member of Commonwealth United Methodist Church for over 70 years.

A memorial service will be held at Commonwealth United Methodist Church on Thursday, April 18, 2019 at 12 noon. Visitation with the family will take place at 11:00 a.m. in the church Fellowship Hall (Grigg Building). Private burial will be in the Currie family plot at Hollywood Cemetery, Gastonia, NC.
