When Bill graduated from Camden High School he proudly joined the U.S. Marine Corps serving during WWII and the Korean War. He was a member of VFW Post 262 for 49 years. Upon his honorable discharge he came to Charlotte, NC where he was employed at Duke Power Company for 41 years until he retired in 1989, becoming an active member of the Duke Power Retirees Group. He was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church and a liaison between the Boy Scout Troop 82. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family at his cabin on Lake Wylie and out on his boat.
The joy of Bill’s life was his family. He married his wife, Magdalene (nee Braswell) on December 17, 1950 and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Bill is survived by his wife of 67 years, Maggie; two children, Susan Layman (Randy) and Michael Thrower (Stephanie) all of Charlotte; five beloved grandchildren, Stephen and Matthew Layman, Sienna, Wylie Summer and Gavin Thrower and three great grandsons, Olsen and Benson Layman and Brecken Layman.
A service to celebrate Bill's life will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, November 8th at Christ Presbyterian Church, 2461 Arty Avenue, Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends following the service. Private interment with military honors will be held at Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
