Polly, age 80, died on May 12, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. Born October 26, 1937, Polly was a daughter of the late Perry and Willie Mae Sloan. She graduated from East Mecklenburg High School in 1956. Polly’s greatest hope and joy was her faith in Jesus and we rejoice that she is in His presence today. Polly devoted her life to her children, grandchildren and great grandsons. Her sense of humor and strength were unmatched. She was loved by all, especially her friends at the local Subway.

In addition to her parents, Polly was preceded in death by her loving husband, James Lawrence Nelson, Sr.; brothers, Boyce Sloan, Joe Sloan and Wade Sloan; and sister, Doris McCorkle. Polly is survived by sons, Jimmy (Cindy) and Charles (Kim); daughters, Debbie Taylor (Johnny), Vivian Lesley (Sonny) and Sandra Nelson; brother, Richard Sloan (Rita); 13 grandchildren; 10 great grandsons; and a very special niece, Karen Niven.

When my daughter Brittany was little she was given a parakeet. The day we brought the parakeet home, we took it out of the pet box to transfer her to her cage and she got away from us. She went flying down the hallway and straight into Brittany’s room. She landed on a pink bunny rabbit on her top shelf.
When we finally got the bird into the cage, I asked Brittany what she was going to name her new pet and she stated Polly. I said “Paulie” like the bird in the movie or “Polly” like polly want a cracker?
She said, “No mom, Polly like Aunt Polly because she made me that pink bunny when I was born.
We did not get to visit Aunt Polly very often, but spoke to her on occasion and we always loved hearing from her through her brother, my dad.
Love to all my cousins and their families.

Polly loved you guys so much. She was so proud of all her family. I enjoyed spending time with her over the years....she was full of life and laughter. Polly was a fine lady and friend to all. She didn't meet a stranger and always had something nice to say. My daddy thought so much of her and I am happy they had time together. I find it strange and comforting that her and daddy died on the same day, a few hours and 11 years apart. I know you will all miss her tremendously....we all will. I don't know that I have ever known anyone as tough as Polly...thru all her medical issues she was strong and positive..... Something we can all learn from her. Bless you all. Polly will always be with you and watching over you. Love to you all. June
