It is with sadness the family of Ursula Godfrey announces her death on September 26, 2023, in Charlotte, NC, at the age of 94. She was born on March 6,1929, to the late John and Lillian Ward in New York City. Ursula attended Queen’s College where she met her future husband, Ralph Godfrey. She finished her degree and graduated from Hunter College in 1950 and married Ralph in 1952. During their marriage they lived in Baldwin, NY, Levittown, PA, Dallas, TX, and Dunwoody, GA. They moved to Charlotte, NC, in 2016 to be near family.
Ursula will be remembered fondly for her love of her faith and her family. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church in Dunwoody, GA, for forty years where she was active in her Circle. She was also part of a group of ladies who counted and deposited the offerings every Monday for several decades.
She was the matriarch of her family. Although her children are spread across the country, she stayed in close contact with each of them. She never failed to send birthday cards. She and Ralph had season tickets to the Atlanta Falcons and loved to tailgate with friends. Her proudest accomplishment was organizing the family’s yearly reunion on Fripp Island, SC, that lasted 41 years until she could no longer go there.
In her free time she was a voracious reader. She loved jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, and was a master of trivia. Don’t disturb her during Jeopardy.
She is predeceased by her husband Ralph, who died in 2021. She is survived by her daughter Eileen (Nick) Leoncavallo of Irmo, SC, sons Richard (Missy) Godfrey of Garner, NC; James (Lillian) Godfrey of Charlotte, NC; and David (Lina) Godfrey of Tiburon, CA, Ursula is also survived by her sister, Marie Friszolowski of St. Pete Beach, FL, grandchildren Laura (Ryan) Steckman of Herndon, VA, Stacey Hollohan of Columbia, SC, Mark (Victoria) Godfrey of Washington, DC, Leah (Eddie) Adams of Raleigh, NC, Brian (Becky) Godfrey of Durham, NC, Dallas Godfrey of Dallas, TX, and Sonya, Anya, Alia, Kaia, and Julian Godfrey of Tiburon, CA. Ursula also has 3 great grandchildren, Anna and Louis Godfrey and Jacob Adams plus other extended family who will miss her dearly.
We would like to thank the staff of Brookdale Carriage Club for their care of Ursula. There will be a private memorial service at a later date. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
