He was born on Dec. 2, 1950, to William Francis Poveromo, Sr., and Angela Simonetti Poveromo, in Flushing, NY.
During his early childhood Bill enjoyed living in several locations with his family while his father was serving in the Army. The family then settled in Charlotte, NC, where Bill attended Myers Park High School. Later he attended UNC – Chapel Hill and Wingate University, earning a degree in Arts and Sciences. He devoted more than 20 years to a career in television journalism at NBC12 in Richmond, VA. As a photographer and producer, Bill was instrumental in the development of 12 On Your Side, earning an Emmy nomination for investigative reporting in 1992. He was also named News Photographer of the Year in 1984 by United Press International.
After Richmond, Bill moved to Mt. Pleasant, SC, to enjoy life closer to his daughter and the beach. Later, he returned to Charlotte after needing the loving care provided by his family.
Throughout his life, Bill pursued his love of travel and photography, taking many memorable trips with his daughter. He also was a Master Gardener. He was passionate about the Yankees, UNC basketball, the Beatles, Clapton and all things rock and roll.
Bill is survived by his daughter Virginia Poveromo of Charlottesville, VA; sisters Marie Poveromo of Charlotte, and Beth Jarvis (husband Steve) of Wake Forest; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, other relatives, dear friends; and Virginia’s mother, Sue Poveromo.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister Judy Szymonski.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, Feb. 24, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Gabriel Catholic Church Chapel, 3016 Providence Rd., Charlotte, NC.
