Phyllis was born in Great Yarmouth, England on 1/28/34. She was the last child of Albert & Maggie Chambers. At the time of her birth, she had a sister, Ethel (18) & 2 brothers, Edgar (16) & James (14.)
She was only 5 when WWII broke out. Stories were often shared about that time in her life as she remembered it. She usually ironed while watching old movies about that era.
Phyllis was an athletic teenager. She enjoyed competing in hurdle jumping & loved to swim in the North Sea. As a child she could see the ocean from her bedroom window in Great Yarmouth. Her love of the ocean deepened throughout the years. She found solace in listening to the sounds of the waves & the seagulls. She was certain that she'd inherited her love of the ocean from her father who was a Merchant Marine.
Phyllis was only 16 when she met a "Connecticut Yankee" visiting Great Yarmouth, on 6/4/50. 24 yrs later their 1st grandchild would be born on that day!
While living in Spokane, Washington ('63-'68) Phyllis worked as a nurse's aide & was one of only a chosen few to be offered the opportunity to continue training to become a RN. She was unable to accept the offer because her husband was transferred to Torrejon AFB, Madrid, Spain. Her memory of that accomplishment though was a source of pride & happiness for her.
Phyllis grew up knitting, like her mother & sister. Many of her creations, lovingly made, are now treasured items in the hands of her loved ones. In later years she started doing many different kinds of crafts which she thoroughly enjoyed.
Phyllis was a spiritual, kind & loving soul who always had an open ear for anyone who just needed someone to listen. She was also extremely generous. If you were out shopping with her, she more often than not would insist on paying for everything. If you mentioned you liked something, you were most likely to find it in your possession!
Phyllis was foremost a totally devoted mother who was always there for her children through thick & thin. She was the one true constant in their lives. It is beyond difficult to conceive of life on this planet without her.
