Edwin Martell Montgomery was born 2 March 1933 premature but destined to do great things. He always said if he had been born one day later his birthday would be 3-3-33! Marty as he was called later in life, was the son of Edwin Raymond Montgomery and Mildred Louise Upton and born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He grew up smaller than most of his classmates, since he was started in school at 4 1/2. He learned early in life that with hard work he could accomplish much.
Marty was the fourth of five children, preceded in death by his only brother Lynn Edwards Montgomery and two sisters, Joan Lee and Patricia Ann. His youngest sister Sarah Jane, survives him.
His early years were spent between Pennsylvania and Ohio, and California, and ended up in Fontana, Riverside, California. He attended Chaffey High School, where he discovered he could run like the wind. He loved sports of all kind and played them all but found his real talent was on the track running both cross country and track mostly the mile. After setting several records at Chaffey High School, one lasting 23 years before broken, he attended The University of Southern California and began to help his NCAA Championship teams achieve great fetes. He was on a team that he could say in the 5 years he was there, "never lost a meet". After finishing at USC, he married Ayn Jorgensen in 1959 and proceeded to begin what he believed was the REAL accomplishment of his life--HIS FAMILY! His children with his first wife are Martell Brandt, Lisa Ann, Kurt Michael, Leslie Dawn, Jennifer Joy and Marcie Ayn. They all mourn his passing but look forward to reuniting in the next life.
Marty remarried in 1982 to Ann Mohr Bess who had two children of her own, Mindy Ann, and Richard Paul III, R.P. and they had together John Gerret Montgomery. His true legacy in life was not the 4:09 mile he ran in college, but the wonderful legacy of great kids that have all achieved great things and will continue to move forward making their dad proud.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Ann, and 9 children, 22 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. We all feel blessed to have had him so long, 89 years! He would live to say "HE HAD A GOOD RUN!"
He was always young at heart in life and lived 20 years after a heart attack and finally succumbed to heart failure. It took him on September 20, 2022 peacefully with many of his family surrounding him and others making phone calls to get his last advice for life. His theme was always "GOD, FAMILY, AND COUNTRY! His service will be at the Carlsbad Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Friday October 14 at 11:00.
May you rest peacefully having a great family reunion with all of your loving ancestors. WE LOVE YOU MARTY MONTGOMERY! Less
