John C Kaltner Jr.
November 16, 1928 – April 10, 2019
John C. Kaltner, Jr., 90, passed away peacefully on the morning of Wednesday, April 10 at Suncoast Hospice. During his final days the members of his family gathered to express to him their deep love and appreciation for all he had done for them. John was a remarkable man whose life was filled with many joys and blessings. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 16, 1928 to John and Helen (Quinn) Kaltner, and he was preceded in death by his half-brother Daniel Fallon. He and Gladys (Starkins), his loving wife of sixty-five years, had four children: John (Debra Bartelli) of Memphis, TN; Karen Harbauer of Clearwater; Gladys “Pinky” (Bob) McGreevy of West Chester, PA; and Dennis of Ft. Myers. “Poppy” was adored and admired by his ten grandchildren: Matthew (Jennifer) McGreevy, John (Roxana) McGreevy, Jenny (Steve) Harshberger, Tim McGreevy, Brett (Jessica) Harbauer, Andrew McGreevy, Luke McGreevy, Josh Kaltner, Meghan (Matthew) Prisuta, and Holly Kaltner. In addition, he is survived by three great-grandchildren: Brixton Harbauer, Max McGreevy, and Bennett McGreevy. John served in both the United States Navy (1945-49) and the Merchant Marines (1949-53), and after completion of his service he was an employee of the City of New York. Upon his retirement in 1976 he and his family moved to Clearwater, where he shared with others, including his friends at the Food Court, his unique sense of humor and his love of the arts. He and Gladys opened Highland Music Store soon after arriving in Pinellas County, and he continued to offer guitar lessons to area residents for many years. A talented musician, an accomplished artist, and an avid reader, John’s creative drive and passion for learning remained undiminished throughout his life. He was a parishioner at All Saints Catholic Church in Clearwater. A celebration of John’s life will be held at Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home and Memorial Park on Saturday, May 11 from 11 am until 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Clearwater Library Foundation at 100 North Osceola Ave. Clearwater, FL 33755.
