He was born in Pittsburgh, PA on January 7, 1930 to Betty and Isadore Roth. Harry graduated from North Hills High School in 1947. He soon joined the military, serving first as a drum major in the Army Band before becoming a Military Policeman (MP) and then an agent in the Army's Criminal Investigation Division (CID).
Harry served his country honorably from 1948 to 1970. His tours of duty included Pittsburgh, Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Korea and Vietnam. It was on a blind date while stationed in Pittsburgh where then-Corporal Roth met his future wife, Sergeant Betty J. Kalinowsky.
After dating and then marrying Betty on July 9, 1951, Harry remained in the service until the 1970s as the family lived in Orleans, France; Huntsville, Alabama; Schweinfurt, Germany and Northern Virginia. While in Huntsville and working full-time, Harry returned to school, ultimately earning a Bachelor's Degree in Criminology from the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He retired from the military as a Chief Warrant Officer 3, and took up a new career working for USAirways.
Harry and Betty retired in Bermuda Run in the late 1980s. His interests included cross-stitching and quilting, golf, gin rummy and poker, and he was a lifelong Steelers and Pirates fan. He also served a term as Bermuda Run's mayor.
Before Betty's passing in 2014, she and Harry were married for 62 years. He leaves behind their three sons and their wives David (Sharon) of Arlington, VA; Ira (Julie) of Athens, GA; and, Sam (Barbara) of Concord, CA and five grandchildren (Anna, Ben, Claire, Kelsey and Jacob), as well as all their nieces and nephews and one very loving caregiver, Linda Craig of Athens.
A brief graveside service and interment will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at Westlawn Gardens of Memory, 6135 Ridgecrest Road, Clemmons, NC.
