Robert "Bob" Meyer
May 18, 1932 – October 11, 2013
Robert (Bob) Earl Meyer, 81, of College Station, passed from this life on Friday October 11 at St. Joseph Regional Health Center. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 16, at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station. A memorial service is set for 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 17, at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station with Rev. Troy Allen of First Baptist Church College Station officiating. Bob was born May 18, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois to Albert H. and Elsie L. (Rick) Meyer. He received B.S and M.S. degrees in Horticulture from Purdue with minors in Agronomy and Biochemisty. In 1956, Bob was drafted into the US Army where he spent his time as a Chaplain Assistant until he was honorably discharged in 1958. After serving in the Army, Bob made his way to Madison, Wisconsin where he earned his Ph.D in Agronomy in 1961. Upon receiving his Ph.D., Bob was hired as a plant physiologist for the Agricultural Research Service Center of the US Department of Agriculture in College Station, TX. Not long after his arrival he met Wanda Barkley at the First Baptist Church of College Station where they both sang in the choir. They were married at All Faiths Chapel on the Texas A&M University campus on December 15, 1962 and for 46 years, they enjoyed traveling and the outdoors; spending much of their time hunting deer, ducks, geese, turkey and exotic big game as well as fishing. Bob continued his work with the USDA until he retired in March of 1988, but retirement was short lived for Bob who’s love of plants lead him to work for the Texas Transportation Institute from 1991 until 1995 as a research scientist. As an active member of the community, Bob served on the Senior Advisory Committee for the parks and recreation department of the City of College Station, and participated in the senior network throughout Bryan/College Station. Also an active member of his church community, Bob enjoyed singing in the choir, participating in bible study and enjoying fellowship with all. Bob was preceded in death by his wife Wanda, his parents, and his sister Dorothy. Survivors include his brother Richard Meyer, nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends. He will be deeply missed and always remembered for his sense of humor and warming smile. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church College Station.
