Mary “Colleen” Sauber passed away peacefully on January 2nd, 2021. She was 81 years old. Colleen was admitted to the emergency room at Baptist East Hospital i n Memphis, TN, on December 30th, 2020. She was diagnosed with Covid-19 and suffered severe complications of the virus while being compassionately cared for by the skilled team of ICU doctors and nurses. After suffering cardiac arrest, the family made the decision, which was i n accordance with her l iving will, to withdraw her from l ife-prolonging procedures and machines while providing for her i mmediate comfort and alleviation of pain which allowed her peaceful passage. Molly and her husband Eric prayed for her outside her ICU room alongside the hospital chaplain while Katie and Dave, who were both Covid-19 positive, held vigil at home through video conferencing. Thankfully, the i mmediate family, i ncluding the grandchildren, were able to say their goodbyes and give their honor to her. The ICU nurse held Collen’s hand until the very end and the family took much comfort knowing she was not alone when she passed. She was a friend to everyone she met and always made those around her feel special. She was a shining example of true love, the Catholic faith, and a l ife well l ived. Colleen was born to parents Walter and Ethel Crahan on October 23rd, 1939 i n Napoleon, OH. She attended St. Mary’s College from 1957-59 and graduated from Catholic University of America with her BS i n Nursing. In 1965, she married David Sauber. She worked as an RN throughout her l ife, most recently i n the Postpartum Mother and Baby Unit at St. Luke’s Hospital i n Shaker Heights, OH. Additionally, Colleen actively volunteered and served i n her communities. She was especially devoted to Christ Child Society i n Akron, OH and spent many years as a volunteer EMT with Hudson EMS i n Hudson, OH. She was active i n her church communities i n the choir and as a eucharistic minister at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church i n Cheboygan, MI, St. Mary Catholic Church i n Hudson, OH, and St. Brigid Catholic Church in Memphis, TN. Katie and Molly
When I shared your mother’s passing with my daughter, Amanda Marsh, she shared a memory of your mother making pancakes with chocolate chips in them after a sleepover. She said, ‘Whoa’! I didn’t know you could do that.
Your mom was a lovely, fun person.
Thinking of you. Paula Marsh
