

She was born in Lenora, Kansas, May 8, 1935 to Glade and Goldie Smith. At the age of 2, the family relocated to Colorado Springs, Colorado. Dee married Leon Hendrickson in December of 1951 and graduated from Palmer High School (Colorado Springs High School) in the spring of 1953. Leon was drafted into the Army and they relocated to El Paso, Texas. Following his term in the Army, they returned to Colorado Springs where he worked for Adams Excavating before starting his own business. They operated Hendrickson Excavating until Leon’s death in September 1982. Dee worked at the American Heart Association as well the Mitre Corporation before retiring to travel and visit children and grandchildren.
Her family and extended family were extremely important to her and she took pride and joy in all of their accomplishments.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her loving daughters, Debra Hendrickson and her husband Pete Atwater of Fairfield, Connecticut; Lori and Perry Badley of Ponca City, Oklahoma; Sharon and Tom Maloof of Tarpon Springs, Florida; her grandchildren, John, Jennie (Bryan), Michael and Emily; her brother Dwight (Bonnie) Smith; her extended family Jan and Gary Scheimer, Scott and Eric Scheimer; Dee and Bob Kerr, Andy and Kayla. She also leaves behind many wonderful nieces, nephews and, last but not least, many grand dogs, all of whom she treated just like family. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sister, Twilah Flowers.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Friday, March 17, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Swan-Law Funeral Directors Chapel, 501 North Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Colorado Springs. Donations may be made in the name of DeVeta Hendrickson to St. Jude Childrens Hospital or the charity of your choice.
