Charlotte Mae Hudnell, 82, passed away June 27, 2022, at home surrounded by her family. Friends may gather at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 West Columbia, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Friday, July 1, 2022.
Charlotte was born in 1939 to Joseph and Annie Ira Jordan Alford in Holley, Florida. She married James in 1958 at Elizabeth City, NC, spending the next 20 years as a Navy wife. James passed away March 30, 2022. They had been married 63 years.
Charlotte loved playing softball; for over 30 years, she pitched for many teams. She mothered and adored her family until the last. Charlotte enjoyed playing the slots, too. Not necessarily in that order. Our mom was friendly, outgoing, generous, and never met a stranger. She was very successful at waitressing, doing so for 50 plus years, and could land a job no matter where we lived.
She is survived by Buddy, her 4-legged fur baby; daughters Rene Hudnell Atkins (Joe Acton) and Karen Gant (A.G.); grandchildren, James “Brad” Atkins, Heather Atkins, Austin, Isaac, and Rowan Gant; great- grandchildren, Ethan, Ren, Simon, and Charlie Atkins; sisters, Carol Andrews and Earline Anderson; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, and one sister.
Our mother believed that no matter how bad you were feeling, a little bit of lipstick would perk you up. As would a snack. Charlotte was always prepared for either occasion as she never left home without a tube of lipstick and a package of cheese crackers in her purse.
In honor of Charlotte, always be willing to offer comfort to others with your own version of lipstick and cheese crackers.
