Reverend Benjamin Franklin Prophitt, 91, of Fortson, GA went to be with his Lord and Savior, October 11, 2018. Reverend Prophitt was born January 26, 1927 in Delta, AL to his late parents Benjamin Franklin and Lucinda Wilkerson Prophitt.
Over his life time he acquired quite a list of achievements: He ministered in several churches in Georgia, Alabama and Florida. He was the founding pastor of Lighthouse Assembly (now Refuge Church) in Waverly Hall, Georgia and was there for 18 years; he had 32 years of service with the Columbus Postal Service where he received four Superior Carrier Awards; he served with the United States Marine Corp for 12 years, serving in WWII and the Korean War, and was decorated with numerous medals including the Bronze Star for saving thee men while under fire, the Combat Medal with a Gold Star, the Asiatic Pacific with two Gold Stars, the Presidential Citation with 6th Marine Division on Okinawa, The Presidential Citation 1st Marine Division in Korea, the Korean Presidential Ribbon, China Cruse, WWII Victory Medal, United Nations Medal, Korea Medal, and the American Defense Metal.
Other than his parents, Reverend Prophitt is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Myrdis Wilbourn Prophitt; son Rodney James Prophitt; brother Bobby Ray Prophitt; two sisters, Sara Green and Georgia Duty. He is survived by: two daughters, Felica Jackson and Shelia Burleson; two sons, Charles Edward Prophitt and Jimmy Bruce Prophitt; 19 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren, 27 great-great grandchildren and 1 great-great-great grandchild; nieces, nephews, other family members and a multitude of friends.
The family will receive friends in the St. Elmo Room of Striffler-Hamby, 4071 Macon Rd. Columbus, GA from 3-7 pm Monday, October 15, 2018. Funeral Services will be Tuesday, October 16 starting at 11:00 am in Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby, followed by a Committal Service in Parkhill Cemetery with Military Honors. Reverends Danny Courtney and Chuck Griffith will officiate.
