He was born on July 20, 1935 in Albany, Georgia to the late Joseph Wilson Briggs and Miriam Allen Briggs. Lee was a graduate from Albany High School. He was very athletic in high school, playing basketball and running track. After high school he went to Mercer University where he became active in ballroom dancing. He would take his enjoyment of ballroom dancing into becoming an instructor for several dance studios. Lee was an insurance agent with American General. After his retirement he engaged in the enjoyment of ballroom dancing again, becoming a teacher for Columbus State University’s Continuing Education Dept. Lee was Christian by faith and attended several churches in the Columbus area serving as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and was very active in church functions. For leisure, Lee played tennis and captained several local tennis teams. He loved his family and spending time with friends. Lee will be greatly missed by all who knew and especially loved him.
He is survived by his wife, Paulette Briggs; his children, Michele Briggs Denski, Liebe Alan (Paige) Briggs, Debra (Johnny) Brewer, and Nicole Torrance; five grandchildren, Ian Austin Briggs, Tela Torrance, Ari Lavery, Alicia Dawn Faircloth Byrd, and Kelly Lee Tynes; siblings, Dale Briggs Deckert, Bob Briggs, Beatrice (Gregg) Kaupke, and Elize (Phil) Greene; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Family will visit with friends on Thursday, January 21, 2021 at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary in the St. Elmo room from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM, with Eulogy and Service to follow from 10:00am – 11:00 am in the same St. Elmo room. Family will gather in Albany, Georgia at Crownhill Cemetery for a graveside service at 2:00 PM.
