Nancy Ann (Roscoe) Heber, of Upper Arlington, age 87, passed away on Friday, September 22, 2023 in her home. Nancy was born September 18, 1936, in Columbus, Ohio, and was raised there by parents, Helen and John Roscoe (both deceased). She attended Central High School and graduated in 1954, Valedictorian of her class. She received a full scholarship to The Ohio State University and graduated cum laude in education in 1957. Her teaching career spanned 30+ years beginning in Columbus City Schools with the bulk of the time teaching in Upper Arlington City Schools at Greensview and Burbank Elementary Schools as a classroom teacher and Elementary Instructional Specialist. During her teaching years, Nancy continued her education by receiving a Master’s degree from The Ohio State University. She was a designated Martha Holden Jennings Scholar, plus received the honor of being Upper Arlington Teacher of the Year in 1972. Nancy has been a resident of Upper Arlington for over 60 years, moving there with her family in 1961. Throughout her adult life, Nancy was involved in a variety of interests, service projects and organizations: Eastern Star and Ladies Oriental Shrine. As a life-long member of King Ave. United Methodist Church, she and her late husband, Bob, served on many committees, as well as chairing the fund raising campaign for a new organ and chancel renovation. Together they worked to make King Ave. a welcoming and inclusive congregation. An interest in gardening began in childhood, and extended on into her adult and married life. She and Bob shared their garden with others to enjoy through the annual Open Garden Program of Columbus Parks and Recreation. Nancy joined a garden club, Serendipity, and from then on her interest and involvement in all aspects of it blossomed. Nancy served on the Board of Directors of Garden Club of Ohio as Horticulture Chairman for 30 years. She became a Nationally Accredited Master Flower Show Judge from 1989 to present. She served on the National Garden Clubs Board of Directors for five years. Nancy authored several magazine articles and books related to horticulture; the most notable book, Hortulana, is included in the Ohioana Library, and has been distributed all over the country as required reading horticulture classes. She taught adult single day courses on various horticulture topics in 31 different states over a period of 13 years. Awards also came Nancy's way during adulthood pertaining to her creative endeavors: Photography Awards were granted in various locations around Ohio, including competitive photography contests. Her photographs were displayed in local church's galleries and most recently in OhioHealth Hospice Kobacker House. As a member of the National Amateur Press Association, Nancy's creative writing won her several Laureate Awards. Family members surviving her are her two children Karen Heber Groff (Jeffrey) and Brian Robert Heber (Mia Foley); grandchildren Daniel Robert Groff and Jessica Ann Groff Hartman {Daniel); sister, Yvonne Roscoe Baker (William); and nephews Jeffery Lenart and John Lenart. Nancy's relationships with family members were the most significant and meaningful to her. Death has physically separated them from her, but death only ends a life - not a relationship. Family members knew that Nancy could always be counted on, no matter what. Bob and Nancy were married 52 years. He passed in 2008, so the time has come for them to be reunited, along with other loved and cherished ones who passed before her.
