Lesley Orvil Friedrich White

November 11, 1961February 8, 2021

In his youth, Lesley White once wrestled a bear. An actual bear; fur, teeth and claws. As a man that towered at 6’7”, why would that have been daunting? He was unscathed, and went on to live a full and beautiful life until the night of February 8, 2021, when he moved on to his next adventure.

Overshadowing his formidable stature was his heart, and insatiable drive to keep learning. It would come as no surprise if most people that knew him would consider him for their lifeline on any quiz game show. Lesley White was a man of faith and an ordained Deacon at his church. He knew that to share the word of God, you had to live it, show it by example. Instead of quoting the gospel, he lived Jesus’ teachings. He wasn’t a perfect man, but he knew that perfection wasn’t necessary in an imperfect world, that it was more important to do right and leave everyone you encountered better than when you met.

And we are all better for having Lesley White in our lives. His smart sense of humor made him a joy to be around. What brought him joy was being outside. Be it hunting or fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving or swimming, hiking or camping, that is what he enjoyed above all else. Even his work was primarily outside, spending his career in construction. He took pride in that work, the projects he built have served hundreds, thousands, millions of people. The highways and roads he built, the parking lots and stores, the offices and buildings, all are monuments to his legacy.

February 8th was the culmination of four years of fighting cancer for Lesley White. Unlike that bear he fought in his youth, this battle left him scarred. There were moments of success, and respite, but never defeat. He is survived by his daughter Sarah, mother Elke and her partner Glen, sisters Peggy and Angie, brothers-in-law Jeff and Brad, nieces and nephew Kaity, Kasey and Colton, and other dearly loved family and friends.

In lieu of flowers or other similar sentiments, please donate to Family Promise of East Bell County, or whatever charitable cause you are most passionate about. Due to COVID-19 and Lesley’s desire to keep those he loved safe, the family is waiting until summer 2021 to host a celebration of life, with details to come later.

Leslie was the first one we saw as we entered the church sanctuary. Oftentimes he would hold open the door for my mom and me and greet us with his huge smile and hug us tenderly. He always had a kind word for anyone and went out of his way to make people feel welcome and loved. Rest in paradise, Leslie.
