Funeral Services for 1SG (RET) RICHARD LOGAN “DICK” HEIGES, 75, of Kempner will be 12:00 PM Friday, March 7th at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Copperas Cove followed by interment with full military honors at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
Richard Logan Heiges, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on March 1, 2014 at Metroplex Hospital in Killeen, Texas.
Heiges was born in Mechanicsburg, PA to William and Ruth Heiges and grew up on a dairy farm in rural Cumberland County. At 15, his father accepted a position as a ranch manager on a 14,000-acre ranch near Tallahassee, FL. Along with working on the ranch for his father, he also excelled in Football and Baseball at Leon High School in Tallahassee.
Upon graduation from Leon High in 1956, he entered the United States Army. During his first assignment in Germany, he met his wife, Lydia. On April 24, 1959, they were married in Kochel Am See, Bavaria. They have six children born in Germany, Kentucky, and Texas.
After a decorated 22-year military career, including two tours in Vietnam during the Vietnam War, Heiges retired as a First Sargent on Fort Hood in 1979. After his retirement, he moved his family to Kempner, where he and his wife operated D&L Quarter Horses, as well as running a cattle ranch. He spent the remainder of his life working with animals on his ranch, which had always been his true passion.
In 1983, he was hired on Fort Hood Civil Service to the Directorate of Engineering and Housing (DEH, later known as Department of Public Works), where he eventually worked his way up to the Chief of the Maintenance Division for the entire post. He retired from civil service in 2013.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, children Sargent-First Class (RET) William E. Heiges, Sr. and wife, Pia of Wiesbadent, Germany; Diana L. Villarreal of Killeen, Twanda L. Somerville and husband, David of Killeen; Tanja B. Poboril and husband, Gerald of Moffat; Tamara L. Heiges of Kempner; and Richard W. Heiges and wife, Andria of Brenham; and 11 grandchildren, Lydia, Sean, Cal, William, Joshua, Cara, Ric, Amy, Micah, Michael, and Abi.
