Lucy Marie Tumolo was born in Philadelphia, PA on 2-15-1949. She was welcomed as the second daughter to Phyllis (Iorio) and Anthony Tumolo. She would eventually be part of a large family that included eight siblings and resided in a home that included her elderly maternal grandmother as a household member. She was 70 years old at the time of her passing in Orange, CA. The staff from St. Joseph’s Hospice services attended her to comfort needs. She passed away on 12-3-2019, six weeks after being diagnosed with advanced cancer and metastases. The staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital and at Orange Healthcare and Wellness Center did their best to evaluate, diagnose and provide comfort treatments for her.
Lucy attended the neighborhood parochial grammar school in Philadelphia, Our Lady of Consolation School. She then attended St. Hubert’s Catholic High School for Girls where she studied a business curriculum and graduated in 1967. She attended Drexel University for business courses and eventually earned an Associate’s degree. Lucy relocated from Philadelphia to Orange County, CA in 1976.
She was known to be a conscientious and excellent worker. She spent most of her 40 working years as a bookkeeper in the banking industry. If there were tedious or special situations that needed to be fixed, it would often be given to Lucy to solve. She was very proud of her work!
She was a member of St. Columban’s Church in Garden Grove and enjoyed participating in parish events along with other members of the family. She resided with her sister, Joanie, for the past 12 years and thoroughly enjoyed associations with her niece and nephew and also her grandniece and grandnephew. She also was a member of the Garden Grove Senior Services and participated in their many varied activities.
One of her fondest memories was her trip to Europe in 2017, mainly to visit ancestral towns and doing pilgrimages to Catholic shrines. She was also able to visit with several extended family members who reside in Italy. Over the years, she had been able to visit Hawaii and also Las Vegas with some of her friends. She flew back to Philadelphia in 2007 for the 90th anniversary of the founding of the neighborhood parish. She also participated in a family reunion where seven siblings found the time and good fortune to be together for a dinner and a walk down memory lane together! She was able to see many cousins at that time. While living in Orange County, CA, she frequently participated in day trips to special sites within the Southern California area.
Lucy’s brother, Anthony P. Tumolo Jr., has been listed at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children as missing since October 15, 1966 with no word or any pertinent facts regarding his whereabouts since that date. He is suspected of being deceased or endangered.
Lucy is survived by 7 of her siblings: Joan Tumolo-Hess; Vincent, Joseph, Dennis, Kathleen, Lorraine and William Tumolo. Other survivors include her brother-in-law (Jim Hess), her niece (Marie Hess), her nephew (James Hess, Jr.), her grandniece (Phinley Hess) and her grandnephew (Holden Hess), numerous cousins and extended family, including several families residing overseas, particularly Italy.
Viewing will be held on Monday, December 9, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. at Pacific View Mortuary, 3500 Pacific View Drive, Corona del Mar, CA. Funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
Burial will be held at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery, 1600 S. Sproul Road, Springfield, Pennsylvania 19064. Date for burial will soon be determined.
