Verdine Akins Bloom, a retired teacher, real estate agent/broker and veteran of World War II, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2020 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Verdine was born on January 16, 1921 and was a few short months of turning 100 years old. Being the last of her generation in her family she will be dearly missed.
Verdine is preceded in death by son George Lindsey Akins, and husbands George Dewey Akins, Angus Scott, and Charles Bloom, brother Dan Owen and sister Sue Douglas. Verdine is survived by son, Jonathan Akins and wife D’Laine Shipp, granddaughters, Erica Akins, Jennifer Akins Johnson, and Jamie Akins. Also survived by stepdaughters Elizabeth Scott and Jane Mayhew, stepsons Tom, Mark, and Barry Bloom, sister in laws, Barbara Witherspoon, and LaJill Akins Yakel along with nieces Dana Owen, Holly Roberts, and Laura Swofford, and nephews Kim Owen, and Mark and Kelly Witherspoon.
Growing up in East Texas, Verdine was a very intelligent, beautiful, and loving person. She acquired her degree in Sociology at the University of Texas in Austin and later her master’s at Texas Women’s University in Denton. Grace and dignity are two words that come to mind when remembering Verdine. She was a devout Christian and belonged to the Episcopal and later Catholic Churches regularly attending until she was no longer physically able to. She made many close friends throughout her life. Those that knew her well were mindful that she was never afraid to speak her mind. Even though bed ridden for the last four years of her life, Verdine remained a voracious reader and stayed abreast of and discussed worldwide current affairs. She will be dearly missed and remembered by family and friends.
A graveside memorial service will be held at Sparkman Hillcrest Memorial Park in Dallas, Texas at a later date which friends and family will be made aware of.
