MELVIN BRUCE CLISBY December 11, 1945 - December 7, 2016

Mel passed away on Wednesday, Dec 7th with his family by his side after a short battle with cancer. He leaves behind to grieve, his loving wife of 44 years, Sally, his children Karl Clisby (Tina), Leslie Clisby and Lisa Sarafinchen, his grandchildren Megan Clisby, Gabrielle, Austin, Ethan and Faith Sarafinchen and his sister Barb Bennett (Paul).

Mel was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on December 11, 1945 to Bill and Mary Clisby. He spent his youth in Manitoba and after working for Safeway for a short stint, joined the military in 1968 as a construction engineer. His postings included Moose Jaw, Cold Lake, Winnipeg, Chilliwack, Comox, and Ottawa. He was commissioned from the ranks in 1985 and retired as a captain in 1996. After taking 2 years off he went back to work at CFB Comox as a civilian and worked there until 2009 when he retired for good.

Mel enjoyed the comradery and competition of playing team sports including baseball and hockey. He also loved spending time on the water, where he volunteered with the coast guard auxiliary and spent much time on his boat fishing and crabbing with his family and friends. Mel also spent his time either playing or watching golf and curling. After a lifetime of hard work, his retirement included travelling with Sally on several trips to Mexico and on cruises to various destinations.

Much like his mother before him, Mel was described by his family and friends as one the nicest people you could meet. He always had a smile on his face, never had a cross word to say about anyone, and was always happy to see you. He would go for several walks a day in the neighbourhood and visit with all he encountered, including the deer whom he fed like they were his own.

The family would like to thank Dr. Gee, Dr. Steve and the staff at the Comox Hospice for their care and compassion.

There will be no funeral at his request. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Comox Valley Hospice Society who made his last days so much more peaceful. Arrangements under the direction of Piercy's-Mt. Washington Funeral Home, Courtenay, BC.

My condolences Sally. I traveled with Mel from Ottawa to install computer equipment throughout the country. We always had fun together. Wondered where he went to and what happened with you both. It has been a very long time ago. All of the nice comments about him are so true. He is now home with our Lord.
