Sandra Zawistowski, 63, of McHenry passed away peacefully with loved ones nearby at her home on December 18, 2020. She was born November 22, 1957 in Elgin to Charles and Patricia (Guerra) Porter. Born at only 2 pounds 6 ounces, she was a fighter from the start. On October 14, 2006 she married the love of her life, Joseph Zawistowski after a 20-year courtship. Sandy is survived by her husband, Joe; her children, Rachel (Chris) Haynes, Christina (Scott) Hayes, Sarah (Jim) Johnson; her mother, Pat Miller; her grandchildren, Cole, Parker, Carlee, Kaileigh; her siblings, Colette (Todd) Vanderkin and Jeff (Melissa) Porter; and many extended family members. Sandy was preceded in death by her beloved father, Chuck; grandmothers Alice Guerra and Gladys Porter; and aunt Anna Long. Sandy worked as a paraprofessional at McHenry Middle School prior to retirement. She enjoyed music, crafting, traveling, spending time with family, and spending summers at Fish Lake Beach in Volo. Sandy was known for her positivity and kindness and has been referred to as “a ray of light”. She touched many lives and will always be remembered as a sweetheart, a wonderful mother and grandmother, and a beautiful and caring person who put everyone’s needs above her own. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. There will be a walk-through visitation from 4 to 6pm on Monday, December 28 at Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home, 500 W. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake. We ask that you make your time here brief so all may have the chance to pay their respects. Facial coverings and social distancing will be required. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at www.stjude.org.

To Sandra’s family, I want you all to know how deeply sorry I am for your loss. When I first read that Sandy passed, it was a kick to the head. I just could not believe it. Thanks to Facebook we have been in touch for the last 8 years or so. Though we haven’t seen each other in almost 50 years at times it seemed like no time at all had passed. I am sorry I never had the chance to meet Joe, her daughters, or grandchildren. I know how much she loved all of you, and how much she missed her father. Sandy was my first girlfriend and my first kiss oh so many years ago. We had talked about getting our families together for a drink and meal once COVID-19 was behind us. Unfortunately that never happened. Again, my condolences to her family. Attached is our graduation photo from Prairie Grove School 1971
