Alex, affectionately known as “Skippy” was born on September 15, 1934 to Alex and Mamie (Simmons) Lucas. He spent his childhood in Northwest Washington DC and Gainesville, Virginia. He attended Phelps High School in Washington, DC, and earned a B.A. and M.ED. from Federal City College, now known as University of the District of Columbia.
Alex served in the United States Coast Guard from 1954-1958, spending most of his time in service on the West Coast and Alaska. After being honorably discharged, Alex began working at General Services Administration as a janitor. He moved up the ladder until his retirement in 1986 as the Director of the Building Division for the National Capitol Region of General Services Administration. Alex, always the entrepreneur, owned a farmer’s market, a variety of side jobs (even as a kid), and helped out family and friends—all while working full time. Of course, retirement really meant leaving one profession for another because he wasted no time in starting a construction company, RCC & Associates, which he operated until 2006. However, he maintained his Virginia Class A Contractors’ license until 2023. During his time as a general contractor, Alex mentored several individuals to begin their own company or prepare for positions as skilled plumbers, carpenters, and electricians.
A country boy at heart, Alex spent a great deal of time in Gainesville, Virginia on the family farm. He loved being around animals, particularly horses, and enjoyed nature and his childhood friends. Alex even dabbled in the sport of kings as a racehorse owner. Alex eventually moved to Gainesville where he built a house for his family and remained there until purchasing a farm in 2003 in Culpeper, VA. He found serenity in looking after the cattle, fishing in the pond, and looking over the green valley.
Alex is preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Mamie; his siblings: Erma, Yvonne, Jeannette, Juanita, Barbara and Martha Ann.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife of 39 years, DeLores Michelle; children, Yvette (David) Holland, Alex III (Pam), Kenyatta, Katherine and Jacqueline; brother, John (Rosie) and sister, Lucy; grandchildren, LaTonia, Erika, David Jr., Alex IV, Justin, Monique, Kenneth, Kerry, and Antoine; great-grandchildren, Michael, Carter, and Kennedy; great-great grandchildren, Kamila and Michael Jr.; niece, who was more like a sister, June; godson, Charles (Kim) Moore; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Alex’s larger-than-life personality, quick wit, love of country music, always willing to help, his “Alex-isms”, and laugh will forever be part of our memories and hearts, which he gave unconditionally to all.
A memorial service is scheduled on Saturday, January 13th at 11:00 a.m. at Community Baptist Church in Fairfax Station, with visitation hour starting at 10:00 a.m.
