The family escaped Communism during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. The family did not speak any English, knew no one in the United States and were brought to Fort Worth, TX by their sponsor – the Unitarian Church. She graduated from Amon Carter Riverside High School in Ft. Worth, TX. She married Gabor Kovats on June 2, 1962 - they were married for 57 years. After having two children the family moved to Dallas, TX. Magdi enjoyed making her house a home for her family.
She was a naturalized citizen – proud to be an American and a Texan. She loved and took great pride in her Hungarian heritage and family. Magdi enjoyed many things including playing the violin, dancing to big band music, baking her ‘famous’ Hungarian bread, attending operas, going out to eat to celebrate anything and everything and shopping. Additionally, she loved to travel and got the opportunity to move back to Europe for a short time to travel and see many countries. Although Magdi enjoyed a variety of things her true passion was crocheting, knitting, and needle point. In 2018, the Kovats’ moved into Assisted Living where she requested a crocheting club be started with her leading and teaching and helping others. Unfortunately, she didn’t make the inaugural meeting on October 17, 2019, but we know she would be so proud that the group was started and will carry on.
Survivors include: Husband, Gabor Kovats of Dallas, TX; one son Gabor Kovats and wife Mary Anne of Little Rock, AR; one daughter Magdalena Brady and husband Jay of Dallas, TX; three sisters, Viola Ohr of Weatherford, TX; Emese Greksa and husband Sandor of Ft. Worth, TX; and Tunde Baliko of Ft. Worth, TX; and many nieces, nephews, along with great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jeno and Magdolna Baliko, brother-in-law, Robert Ohr, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
