She accepted Christ at an early age under the leadership of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Louisiana and later became a member of Greater People Baptist Church in Texas where she was a member of the Sanctuary Choir and other committees.
Velma worked at Hawthorn Suites in Dallas, TX as the Executive Chef where she was awarded Employee of the Year for several years.
Velma also known as “Poochie” to so many was full of spirit and full of life. She touched so many hearts because of the person she was. She loved being around family and friends. Everyone knew her for her smile and heart felt and encouraging words. She always had words of wisdom. At times you would have thought she was a doctor because she could treat anything and make you feel good, rather it was a broken heart, scratches or headache she had the remedy. She had the food to the soul. She enjoyed the simplest pleasures in life, such as cooking, music, and dancing. Traveling to the casino brought the greatest joy.
Velma gained her wings on September 4, 2021 at her residence in Dallas, TX.
Velma is survived by her husband Bill Hargrove married on September 25, 1967 for 53 years.
She was proceeded in death by: her father and mother R.C. Jenkins, Pearlie Mae Jenkins; 2 brothers Mitchel Jenkins, Harvey Jenkins; and 3 sisters Lela Jenkins, Helen Hayes, and Elizabeth Jenkins.
She leaves to cherish her memories: 1 son, Anthony (Demetrice) Jenkins; 3 daughters, Jacqueline Jenkins, Patricia Hargrove (Patrick Kwentua) and Leslie Hargrove; Jonathan (Tamara) Hayes; She was so compassionate to help others that it allowed her to foster and raise three children as her own; Shawnquez Warfield, Jamarvin Warfield and Aniya Warfield; 11 grandchildren, Shajacquel Jenkins, Dequaleant Jenkins, Chenique Johnson, Joshua Jenkins, LaShunna Jimmerson, Lakeldrick Clark, Cameron Hayes, Melody Williams, Ashley Jenkins, Cemetra Jenkins, Bria Jenkins, and Jaylen Walker; five brothers, Earnest Jenkins, Roy Jenkins, Marvin Jenkins, Charles (Nikki) Jenkins, Carl Jenkins; two sisters, Ada Jenkins and Debra Jenkins, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
