Vertie Pleasant Lauderdale, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend was born April 3, 1945, in Dallas, Texas to the parentage of the late James D. Pleasant and the late Betty Lou Baker. She was lovingly raised by Leroy “Jack” Hudson and Janet Hudson.
Vertie was united in marriage to Sye Alonzo Lauderdale III of Dallas in February 1963. They shared several years of marriage and were devoted parents to Jackie and Forthie. Although the union didn’t last, they remained in each other’s life until the end. Though she never remarried she gave birth to three additional sons Stephen, Joseph, and Jarian.
She received her formal education in the Dallas Independent School District, graduating from James Madison High School. Mom was a Jack of all trades. In 1968 she completed a course at El Centro College in Interior Design. She worked for Texas Instruments, was a Flight Attendant for Braniff Airlines and a Dallas Public Service Officer. In 1982 she attended Neilson Beauty College and became a licensed nail tech and Instructor. She was a registered nurse, a wedding planner and a caterer. In 1987 she took flying lessons and logged in several hours of flight time. After going through many religions from Catholic, to Methodist, to Buddhism and others she went back to school in 1990 to study Theology. Still wanting to learn as much as she could she also attended Mountain View and Cedar Valley colleges.
Our Mom loved the Dallas Cowboys and traveling to exotic places like Korea and Mexico. A fun fact she has visited most of the 50 States and loved her cruises.
She was a member of the Clarence H. Harris Fraternal Order of Elks where she served as secretary. She also served as a Texas Democratic Party Delegate in 2008. In the Spring of 2010, she went to the Ft. Worth Library to work on our family genealogy and to learn more about our family history. We now have 24 large binders full of documentations charting our family lineage all the way back to 1820.
Her son Joseph LaVassa Lauderdale preceded her in death.
