TATTRIE, Lola Jessie, daughter of Wentworth and Nellie Blaxland, formerly of Clam Harbour, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2013 at the age of 94. Lola was predeceased by her husband Keith of 71 years. She is the last surviving member of her family being predeceased by brothers Wilfred, Laurence, James, Edward, Ernest, Harry and Leslie; sisters Gertrude, Marge (Conrad) and Phyllis (Baer); by daughter Judi (Shacklock) and one grandchild. Lola is survived by daughters Barbara (Joe) Coombs, Pam (Gordie) Collins, Doris (Pat) and sons Keith (Heather) and Paul (Nancy). She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Having spent the first 21 years of her life in Clam Harbour, Lola married a handsome school teacher on Christmas Day in 1939. When her husband returned from the war, they lived in the Halifax area until he was posted to Greenwood in the spring of 1960. When Keith retired in 1975 they moved on the outskirts of Greenwood to Tremont Road. In the early 90’s they relocated to the Bedford area to be close to most of their children and where they spent the remainder of their lives.
Lola enjoyed sketching and oil painting still life’s and won an award for a painting she did of her daughter Judi in grade school. She added her talent of painting to many of her husband’s wood crafts over the years; including bird houses and whirligigs. In the late 60’s she enjoyed bowling on the Greenwood ladies league and helped out as a member of the ladies auxiliary at the Kingston legion. Her family will miss her yearly jars of strawberry jam and other fruits and vegetables she preserved. Lola was a closet romantic – she enjoyed reading romance novels for many years. She loved music and could play the piano and attempted to learn the guitar in her 80’s. In her later years, she enjoyed the challenge of intricate jig saw puzzles and solitaire card games. She encouraged her sister Marge’s love of genealogy and passed on her knowledge of family to her daughter to continue.
Lola was a resident of the Cove Guest Home. A special thank you to the nurses and staff of Skylight.
