A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2020 in the Runge Mortuary Chapel, with visitation one hour prior. He will be laid to rest in National Cemetery on the Rock Island Arsenal. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Society.
Don was born the son of Robert and Alice (Johnson) Hultgren on November 30, 1928 in Moline, Illinois. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Bonnie Belle Shirlaw on September 26, 1953 in Davenport, Iowa. She sadly passed away after 62 years of marriage on March 23, 2017. He was employed for many years, and retired from, General Electric Burlington, Iowa.
Don was a loving and active grandfather. He volunteered for the Jazz Fest, also walking in 20 Bix races. In his younger years he belonged to a barber shop quartet, and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church choir for 30 years. He had a passion for woodcarving, was a member of the Mississippi Valley Woodcarvers Association, and an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
Those left to celebrate his life include his daughter, Pamela Hultgren of Rock Island, Illinois; son, Perry (Lisa Miles) Hultgren of Rock Island, Illinois; granddaughter, Emily Hultgren of Davenport, Iowa; great grandchildren, Lazar and Courtez; brother, Weldon Hultgren of Good Hope, Minnesota; twin sisters, Anita Dunbar and Wanita Conner of St. Petersburg, Florida; along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Bonnie Hultgren and his parents.
