James Averweg, 72, of Bettendorf, passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, with his loving family by his side. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 11am at St. John Vianney, 4097 18th Street, Bettendorf. Friends may greet the family Saturday, February 16th from 9am until the service at St. John Vianney. Burial will take place following the service at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorials in James’ name may be made to St. John Vianney Church or the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Jim was born on September 29, 1946 to Arthur and Martha (Siroky) Averweg in Streator, Illinois. He graduated from the University of Missouri at Rolla with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. Jim was united in marriage to Mary Beth Ambler on January 24, 1970. He worked for MidAmerican Energy (formerly Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric) for 39 years. Jim was an active member of St. John Vianney and had belonged to Bettendorf Kiwanis, Bettendorf Chamber of Commerce as a Trail Blazer, the Child Abuse Council, and many other professional organizations. He enjoyed photography, woodworking, reading, traveling, and spending time with his family.
Those left to honor Jim’s memory are his wife of 49 years, Mary Beth, his son Michael Averweg, his daughter Christie (Rod) Stortenbecker; four sisters: Sue (Gary) Fechter, Mary Jane (Paul) Blair, Nancy (Glenn) Good, and Janice (Scott) Scheid; sister-in-law Jane Ambler; three nieces, two nephews, one great nephew and many wonderful friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, his niece Sarah Blair, and his nephew Daniel Fechter.
