The world lost a quiet hero, who saw mind searing action in the WW2 Pacific
theatre as he valiantly fought to protect our freedoms. On quieter days
aboard the Destroyer Escort Canfield, he would sit on a fantail depth
charge to engage in his favorite pastime, fishing. Returning from WW2,
Elmo joined DP&L as a gas apprentice, one day finding himself shaking
hands with Orville Wright while working in the basement of Hawthorne
Hill. At DP&L, he met his wife, Erladale Baldwin, and 63 years of
marriage followed. While they did not have any children of their own,
their many nieces and nephews treated them like a Mom and Dad.
Elmo (Mose or Ted as many of us knew him) enjoyed the outdoors as a
youth, becoming an avid outdoorsman.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Lavern (Bud) Lochtefeld, Ludmilla (Millie) Cboins,
Doris Pearson, and James (Jimmy) Lochtefeld.
In addition to his wife, Elmo is also survived by his siblings, Betty Storck, and Margie Reynolds.
As a man of faith, he was a strong compassionate friend to many. In
later years Ted fussed over his garden and landscaping, bringing beauty
to his neighborhood, both as a good neighbor and good gardener. His
familiar “You betcha” signified his agreement. The World is a
better place because of him.
