OKLAHOMA CITY – Marcella Smoot, 92 years old, died peacefully February 5, 2023 at home with family by her side. She was born January 2, 1931, in Saint-Basile, New Brunswick, Canada, the daughter of Jerome and Ida (Lee) Hèbert.
Marcie met her husband Garland (Jerry) while he was a young airman stationed in Bangor, Maine. Both orphans at a young age, the two forged ahead as she became a military wife and mother. The two of them worked hard to build their family while enduring the hardships of military separations and household moves. When her husband died unexpectedly at 38, she dedicated herself to raising her three children as a single parent, which she did superbly. She spent 20 years as a data analyst at the Midwest City Memorial Hospital where she was the Easter bunny at the annual hospital Easter egg hunt, a task she claimed due to being the only one that fit the costume. However, we all knew how much she loved it. Tiny in proportions but tough in stature she was kind, loved children, dogs and cats, and most everyone. She enjoyed travelling with her lifelong friends, Cathy and Susie.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Garland and her brother, Romeo. She is survived by her daughter and two sons. She was blessed with four grandsons, Jared Hutchinson and his wife Elizabeth Farabee, Kyle Smoot and his wife Christina, Joshua Smoot and his life partner Diana Quezada and Ryan Smoot. She had four beautiful great-grandchildren, Parker, Bowie, Landon, and Henry. Lovely Ella is due for arrival this March.
A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 at the Chapel of Sunny Lane Funeral Home, 4000 SE 29th Street, Del City, Oklahoma 73115. A reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Marcie in a special way may make donations in her memory to the American Arthritis Foundation at https://americanarthritisfoundation.com/donate. Her family would like to acknowledge the loving care provided by the team at SSM Hospice who made her final transition a peaceful one.
