Rosary and visitation will be 6 p.m. Monday, August 27 at Bratcher Funeral Chapel, 401 West Woodard Street, Denison, Texas. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. The Rev. Stephen Mocio will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery under the direction of Bratcher Funeral Home.
Gladys was born March 10, 1928, in Dallas, the daughter of Tomas and Emilia Jerabek Benavides. She attended St. Patrick’s Parochial School in the Cedars district of south Dallas. Gladys married James Alvin Vyers June 21, 1947 in Dallas, Texas. She worked as a seamstress for Nardis of Dallas and Howard Wolf, then was a homemaker after the birth of her first child. Her husband, Jim, was in the U.S. Navy and later the U.S. Air Force for 26 years before they retired to Denison in 1971.
Gladys was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Altar Society for over 50 years and for awhile participated in the choir. She was a member of the Retired Military Wives Club and a volunteer with Meals on Wheels. Her interests included sewing, gardening, and painting.
She was a devoted wife and mother and caregiver to her own mother until Mrs. Benavides’ death in 1985 at the age of 91.
Gladys is survived by two daughters, Ann Vyers and Margaret Vyers, both of Denton, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Vyers in 1986 and 7-year-old son, James Thomas Vyers in 1969.
The family suggests memorials to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.
