Avis Ruth PURVIS
October 8, 1924 – February 26, 2019
Avis Ruth Purvis, age 94, passed away February 26, 2019, after a long battle with Alzheimer's and vascular dementia at Chelsea Place Memory Care, Aurora, Colorado. Avis was born October 8, 1924, in Sherwood, North Dakota to Albion and Ruth Clark.
She graduated as Salutatorian from Sherwood High School in 1941. She attended Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, Missouri and went on to work for the Alien Property Custodian Service in Washington D.C., in 1943, during WWII. This is where she met and married Marine Sargent Herbert Banek, on December 15, 1944. They moved to Ault, Colorado, where she worked as a bookkeeper at the Widmaier Chevrolet Dealership for 13 years. While in Ault she joined the VFW Auxiliary and the Odd Fellows Rebekah. She was the President of the VFW Auxiliary from 1960-1961. She remained active in the Harmony Rebekah Lodge #96 in Canon City. She married Merle Purvis, January 4, 1964. She and Merle moved to Springfield, Colorado and bought a supper club. They moved to Canon City, Colorado in 1973 and bought a mobile home park. In Canon City, she worked as an accountant at the Holy Cross Abbey, for 20+ years, where she retired in 1994, at the age of 70. During this time she also had her own income tax preparation business. She enjoyed the yearly classes, keeping current with the tax laws, and her many clients.
After her retirement, she resumed her love of traveling. She enjoyed many trips, mostly cruises with her daughter. A dream of hers was to visit the Panama Canal which she was able to fulfill on their final trip together. In 2008, her last trip abroad was to a granddaughter’s wedding in Taormina, Sicily. Avis relocated to Aurora, Colorado, in 2008, living at Cherry Creek Retirement Village, Brookdale Assisted Living, and as her disease progressed, finally at Chelsea Place Memory Care. She thrived at Chelsea Place under their wonderful care and great staff. Avis was preceded in death by her father, mother, and five of her siblings; Aden Clark, Francis Clark, Beryl Britsch, Beverly Carter, and Darwin Clark, her first husband; Herbert Banek, and her second husband; Merle Purvis.
She is survived by her three children; Maureen Sheard, Allen Banek, and Merle Purvis, step-son; Kenneth Purvis, eight grandchildren; Jason Sheard, Justin Sheard, Kristin Banek, Nathan Banek, Aubrey Purvis, Steven Purvis, Kendra Purvis, Kenneth Purvis, and twenty-two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Merlyn Hammer, sister-in-law Margaret Clark and a plethora of nieces and nephews.
