She attended Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, Missouri and went on to work for the Alien Property Custodian Service in Washington D.C., in 1943, during WWII. This is where she met and married Marine Sargent Herbert Banek, on December 15, 1944. They moved to Ault, Colorado, where she worked as a bookkeeper at the Widmaier Chevrolet Dealership for 13 years. She enjoyed the yearly classes, keeping current with the tax laws, and her many clients.

After her retirement, she resumed her love of traveling. She enjoyed many trips, mostly cruises with her daughter. A dream of hers was to visit the Panama Canal which she was able to fulfill on their final trip together. In 2008, her last trip abroad was to a granddaughter’s wedding in Taormina, Sicily. Avis relocated to Aurora, Colorado, in 2008, living at Cherry Creek Retirement Village, Brookdale Assisted Living, and as her disease progressed, finally at Chelsea Place Memory Care.
