OBITUARY

Richard "Rit" Thomas

January 24, 1931January 23, 2020

On January 23, 2020, surrounded by loved ones, Richard ‘Rit’ Harry Thomas, of Digby, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 88.

Rit was born in Digby, January 24, 1931. Rit was a resident of Digby County all of his life and was always active in his community. He was passionate about all sport and he excelled in hockey and in the boxing ring. His other passion involved the great outdoors. Rit was an avid hunter and fisherman and no one knew the backcountry like he did. His favourite place of peace was at his camp. This is where he made many lasting memories for his wife, family and friends.

Rit was raised beside the old town dump where he learned early on that it was a place filled with adventure. These early adventures lead to the development of “Digby Salvage and Disposal” in 1965. Rit started off hauling with a 1/2 ton truck and build the company into what it is today. Rit believed in a hard days work at any age.

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Doris Mae Thomas (Dennison) and his daughters Deborah Ann Vantassel (Davey) of Gulliver’s Cove, NS, Darlene Grace Thomas (Scott) of Digby, NS, and son Gregory Lance Thomas (Joanne) of Digby, NS. He was the proud grandfather of 11 Grandchildren, 23 Great-Grandchildren and 8 Great-Great Grandchildren. He will be missed by his siblings: Brother George ‘Wart’ Lester Thomas (Betty). Sisters Bessie Marie Carpenter (Jim) and Gloria Rose Blackmore (George). Rit will also be missed by the many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Ann Thomas; Son Richard ‘Ricky’ Thomas; Brothers Arthur, Roy, and Archie; Sisters Mildred, Helen, Alice, Elizabeth, and Pearl; And His infant Grandson.

The family wishes to say thank you to the following: Private Care, Home Care, VON, EHS, and the staff of Digby General Hospital. A special thank you to Dr. David Lapierre and Kim Marshall for their care that was above and beyond what we could have asked.

There will be a celebration of Rit’s life on Saturday, February 1, 2020, at Digby Wesleyan Church, 84 Victoria St., at 1 pm, with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers the family is asking that you make a donation in Rit’s memory to DARC’s program, The Active Digby Fund. These donations can be made at Town Hall and are used to get local kids involved in minor hockey.

To Richard's family and many friends, I did not know Richard personally but I feel as if I knew him quite well through my late husband, Harold Wilkins. If I'm not mistaken, Harold was related to Richard through the Dennison family. Harold's very often spoke about Richard, especially if he would see him in the distance. He would point him out to and say, "There's Richard Thomas, he's a cousin of mine." He often spoke about how generous and kind Richard was and extremely friendly. I wish I had had the chance to know him better though we did speak on occasion when we would bump into each other in town.
Any loss of a dearly loved family member is difficult and you have my sincere sympathy at this time.

My condolences to Rit’s family and friends. I remember Rit from my early days in Digby. He was always around the rink where I was a rink rat and was always a positive presence. He was about 20 years older than me which is a lot of years when you are a kid but I remember him fondly and with respect.

Rick was a great man, condolences to all the family. I first met Rit And also Juni. Dennison back in the 1970s I believe. It was during the Bear River Cherry Carnival. Rit and his canoe parter Junior needed a few canoe racing partners...so myself and John Jermey volunteered. That sparked a good friendship...he was a honest man and as good a friend one could ever have...they both were...
Lots of great memories for me..

Hugs to you all
