John F. “Jack” Zemantic, 93, of East Hartford, loving husband of 66 years of the late Dorothy “Dot” (Bednarz) Zemantic, peacefully journeyed home to be with his wife in heaven on Friday, February 3, 2023 at Hartford Hospital. Born in Hartford on May 3, 1929, a son of the late John and Elizabeth (Butler) Zemantic, he had been a resident of East Hartford for the past 67 years. Jack was a graduate of St. Thomas Seminary High School in Bloomfield, class of 1947 and was a proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
Prior to his retirement, Jack was employed for 39 years by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, East Hartford where he was Supervisor of the Tool Inventory Control in the Manufacturing Division. He was a member, past vice president, and former president of the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Club. He also was the first president of the Pratt & Whitney Retirees Club. A devout catholic, Jack was a longtime faithful communicant of Our Lady of Peace Church in East Hartford where he was a former member of the Men’s Club and Retirees Club.
Jack was a talented woodworker who enjoyed golfing, solving crossword puzzles, watching Jeopardy, and was an avid reader and loyal fan of the New York Yankees, New York Giants, UConn Women and UConn Men basketball teams. He also loved going to his cottage at Cape Cod for the past 55 years where he went clamming with his Cape Cod family and friends, and where great memories were made, especially during the famous annual Labor Day Clambake. This is when Jack and his buddies made their well-known clam chowder and baked stuffed clams. Most of all, Jack was a devoted and proud husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who cherished every moment spent with his family.
Jack is survived by two sons, Stephen J. Zemantic and his wife Gail of Wethersfield, Thomas A. Zemantic and his wife Joanne of East Hartford; a daughter, Mary-Beth Raymond and her husband David of Vernon; eight special grandchildren, Scott Zemantic and his wife Sarah, Carolyn Brown and her husband Colin, Zachary Zemantic and his wife Bonnie, Hayley Zemantic and her fiancé Marco, David Raymond, Jacqueline Raymond, Rachael Ursin and her husband Devin, Marissa Fogarty and her fiancé Korey; two adored great-grandchildren, Nora and Cameron Ursin. He also leaves two brothers-in-law, George Bednarz of East Hartford, Ray Bednarz and his wife Marilyn of Wethersfield; many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Funeral service will be Tuesday (February 7, 2023) with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:30 am at Our Lady of Peace Church of St. Edmund Campion Parish, 370 May Road, East Hartford. Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church on Tuesday morning. Burial with military honors will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, (Section 1), Hebron Avenue, Glastonbury. Jack’s family will receive relatives and friends on Monday (February 6, 2023) from 4 -7 pm at the D’Esopo East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jack’s name may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
