On Sunday, September 13, 2020, Dr. James M. Falvo, loving husband and stepfather to four children, passed away at the age of 72.

James, also known as Jim, Jimmy, and Jimmy Pop, was born on January 21, 1948 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to James Sunday Falvo and Sarah (Hawthorne) Falvo. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force from 1972 to 1976 as a member of the American Forces Radio and Television Service. Jim holds an Ed.D. in Administration, Curriculum, and Instruction with an emphasis in Instructional Media from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Jim earned his M.A. degree in Communication at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and his B.S.degree in Public Address at Towson State University in Baltimore, Maryland. A pioneer in the field of remote learning, Jim was a full time college professor for eight years, an adjunct for over 20 years, and taught high school for four years. Jim was also a Broadcast Journalist in both commercial radio and television and a certified tennis instructor.

On August 31, 1996, Jim married Kristja (Kris) Jo Pletan. They raised two sons; Philip Jens Pletan and Andrew Conway Pletan, and two daughters; Elizabeth Anne Pletan and Erica Pletan Upham.

Jim had a lifelong passion for tennis, which he taught himself to play by reading books in his college library. He was also a marathoner, completing 12 full marathons, most recently the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC in 2016. He was never too tired to play with his kids and grandkids. Jim had a deep love for teaching, an insatiable curiosity about the world, and was always learning something new. He donated his remains to the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine's Willed Body Program so he could continue teaching even after his passing. Jim was preceded in death by his father, James, and his mother, Sarah. He is survived by his wife Kris; their four children: Elizabeth, Philip, Erica and Andrew; his sister Lynn; his niece Alexis; and four grandchildren. A celebration of life for Jim will be held 1:00 PM, Sunday, September 20, 2020 at Baggerley Funeral Home, 930 S. Broadway, Edmond.

Jim was a rare human. In many ways an even rarer man among the men of his generation. His emotional sensitivity, generosity of spirit and willingness to get down to brass tacks and talk about what is real and what matters — these are some of the in-his-DNA aspects of Jim’s character I hold most dear, will keep closest to my heart and always remember when I think of the man. His mother, Sarah, called Jim “Jammie”. Is there any greater compliment than a mother who loves you? Loves you so much that she gives you a nickname ... that sticks. I already miss you so very much, Jim. I am so grateful for you. You have a strong soul. Strong, strong soul. We will meet again. I look forward to the reunion, my brother.

Jim was my stepdad from the age of 6yrs to 18 yrs prior to Jim and Kris’ marriage . We shared many special moments together. I learned so many things from Jim-including how to perfect my tennis serve, pitch a softball, or perform a lay up in basketball. He helped me with term papers, was crucial in my growth and development even in difficult times. We were able to travel to Disneyland, and Disney World together and for a kid that was simply awesome! Many laughs were had in regards to our pets and we used Jim’s videography skills to capture and create family movies- some of my best childhood photos were taken by Jim. He has passed on to me his love for Nature photography, and the quest to keep learning, living and loving no matter what. I’m so grateful to have reconnected with Jim later in life and hold our memories dear to my heart.
