It was a journey that began almost 96 years ago in the Bronx, New York, home of the Bronx Bombers. And yes, Eric could trade player stats with the best of them dating all the way back to The Babe. Anyone who knew him can recall his contagious smile, his sense of humor and the unforgettable Yankee cap on his head.
From 1942-1945, Eric honorably served his country in the United States Army as a soldier in the 101st AirBourne Division during WWII. Throughout this time, Eric was a German interpreter as well as the proud recipient of a Purple Heart.
Eric’s life became whole when he met the love of his life, Grace Elardo, at Baker and Taylor, and they married on October 5, 1948.
Eric and Grace had three wonderful children – Joan, Ricky and Jean who then extended the circle of love with his precious grandchildren –Eric, Tobias, Monique and Barry.
Among Eric’s favorite pastimes were swimming laps in his pool, working out at the gym, avid crossword puzzler, drinking coffee with the guys and indulging in sweets. A great fan of big bands and for anyone who didn’t know, Eric was quite the dancer, which made him quite popular with the ladies. In addition, he was hands down the best-dressed usher at his church and never missed an opportunity to smile.
Eric Hafenecker aka Hetzie (all heart his nickname from his parents), was really a man who was quite funny. Growing up with the most amazing family: his brother Michael and their in-laws were like none other together. They fed off of each other and once these guys got together, the genuine fun began. In an empty restaurant Eric would joke, “Will there be much of a wait?” At the end of the meal he would ask, “Do you except cash?” Eric even created his own lexicon of words like “monch or moncheiser, klonch, hupsite, bookley”, but we all laughed since we knew the familiar meanings.
Eric Joseph Hafenecker went to heaven on April 22, 2018. He leaves behind his dysfunctional yet, loving family he is very proud of. Eric's infectious and famous smile will forever light up the hearts of the ones he crossed paths with.
Forever and always in our hearts.
