Leonila "Dolly" Montiel was born on October 12, 1952 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She passed away on August 31, 2023. Dolly graduated from New Mexico Highlands University with a degree in Elementary Education. She later earned a Masters Degree in Bilingual Education from the same university. Dolly taught elementary school in Las Vegas, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas. She retired from Mesita Elementary in the El Paso Independent School District in 2010.
Dolly had many talents, which she used to serve the Lord. She played the piano and guitar at home and at church functions. She loved gardening and many turtles (her favorite animal) could be found near or in her garden. The figs from her backyard trees were delicious. She also had a passion for cooking, knitting, and quilting. She belonged to a local knitting group as well as the Paso del Norte Quilt Guild and the Westside Quilting Bee. Her bedroom was filled with quilts and wall-hangings she had sewn over the years. She was famous for her knitted socks. Dolly also enjoyed attending Bible studies. Last, but by no means least, she adored and spent time with her two beloved chihuahuas.
In essence, Dolly was a faithful woman, devoted to her family and the Lord. Her life was filled with friends that loved her like family. She was truly a blessing to all who knew her.
Dolly is survived by her mother, Priscilla Montiel and her sister, Olivia Montiel, both of El Paso, TX. She was preceded in death by her father, Rodolfo Montiel and her sister, Thelma Whalen.
The family wishes to thank her foster home caregivers, Elena DeLa Vega and Anna Gurrola, as well as nurse Willie Olmstead of Tender Care Hospice. Also, many thanks to Dolly's friends who prayed for her; brought gifts, flowers, food; and visited with her. You all embraced her with your love and attention. The family is grateful to each one of you.
There will be no funeral services. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.MartinFuneralHomeWest.com for the Montiel family.
